Learner Pathways at Active Futures Academy

At Active Futures Academy, every young person follows a pathway that reflects their strengths, interests, and individual needs. Learners can choose from our Active Pathway, Creative Pathway, or a Blended Pathway that combines elements of both. The Active Pathway is designed for students who thrive through movement, practical learning and outdoor or sports-based activities, while the Creative Pathway offers hands-on exploration of art, design, textiles, media and expressive subjects. For many learners, a Blended Pathway offers the best of both worlds, allowing them to engage in creative work while also benefiting from movement-led learning and wellbeing development.

Because our provision is personalised, pathways are shaped not only by a learner’s interests but also by their attendance pattern and placement length. Some vocational qualifications require a minimum number of guided learning hours, so the time a student spends with us will influence which accredited outcomes they can pursue. We always work closely with schools, families, and the learners themselves to build a pathway that is ambitious, achievable, and meaningful. Whether a young person is with us for a short placement or a longer-term programme, our goal is to help them move forward with confidence, purpose and a clear sense of their next steps.

Pathway Descriptions

ACTIVE PATHWAY

The Active Pathway is designed for learners who thrive through movement, practical activity and hands-on experiences. This pathway integrates sport, outdoor learning, fitness, and kinaesthetic approaches across the curriculum. Learners focus on developing confidence, physical wellbeing, communication and leadership skills, often working toward short vocational units linked to sport, exercise, and active learning.

CREATIVE PATHWAY

The Creative Pathway supports learners who express themselves best through making, designing, and experimenting. Students explore areas such as art, textiles, craft and design, digital creativity and hands-on production skills. Practical sessions help build focus, confidence, problem-solving and resilience. Learners may work towards creative vocational awards where their placement length and attendance allow.

BLENDED PATHWAY

The Blended Pathway offers the best of both worlds. It allows learners to combine movement-led learning with creative development based on their needs, strengths and interests. This pathway is ideal for students who require variety, benefit from different forms of expression, or need a flexible programme to maintain engagement. Qualification choices and progression routes are personalised depending on how many days the learner attends and the length of their placement.

Wednesday Offer - Future Foundations

Shaping the skills and character for life beyond the classroom.

Every Wednesday at Active Futures Academy is dedicated to developing the whole person and strengthening each learner’s sense of belonging within their community and wider society. Through a blend of practical activities, discussion-based sessions, movement-led experiences and community engagement projects, students explore themes such as identity, wellbeing, respect, relationships, inclusion, citizenship and future aspirations. The focus is on building confidence, emotional resilience, positive social behaviours and an understanding of how they can contribute meaningfully to the world around them. Whether through volunteering, creative expression, physical activity, team challenges or guided reflection, our Wednesday programme helps learners grow into confident, responsible and empowered young people who can thrive beyond the classroom.
